Opening Thought
“Nature is not only around me; nature is within me.”

When someone says, “Let us go to nature,” we usually imagine leaving buildings and roads to visit a forest, river, mountain, or beach. The words suggest that nature is somewhere else and that human life stands outside it.

But look closely at your own body. The water you drink becomes part of your blood and cells. Oxygen from the air supports every organ. Food built from soil, sunlight, water, plants, animals, and human work becomes energy and tissue. The minerals in our bones come from the Earth. We are not visitors from another world. We are Earth in human form.

Our cities do not cancel this relationship. Concrete, glass, metals, wood, and energy all begin with materials and processes connected to nature. Technology can transform those materials, but it cannot create a life independent of air, water, food, and a stable environment.

Recognizing that we are part of nature does not mean rejecting cities or returning to the forest. It means designing human life with humility. A healthy society protects the systems that make society possible. Clean water, fertile soil, breathable air, biodiversity, and a livable climate are not decorations around human progress. They are its foundation.

This understanding changes environmental responsibility. If we imagine nature as something outside us, protection may feel like charity for trees and animals. If we recognize that we belong to the same living system, care becomes self-respect joined with compassion.
Belonging also brings comfort. We are part of a story much larger than our worries. The breath entering us has moved through the world. The sunlight warming our face has traveled an enormous distance. The same rain that touches a leaf may one day enter a river, a field, or a cup.

To say “I am part of nature” is not to claim ownership. It is to accept membership. A good member receives, contributes, and respects limits. We can enjoy human creativity while remembering the living foundation beneath it.
Today, place your hand over your heart and take one slow breath. The world is entering you, and you are returning breath to the world. The relationship is already happening. Our task is simply to live within it wisely.

Once we understand this belonging, environmental care becomes less like an extra duty and more like a natural expression of who we are.

Buddhist Reflection
The teaching of interdependence shows that the self does not exist separately from supporting conditions. Body, food, air, relationships, and environment continually sustain us. Seeing this reduces isolation and gives rise to gratitude and responsibility.

Today’s Action
