A Cambodian official has rejected Thailand’s claim that its recent activities along the Cambodia-Thailand border comply with the December 27, 2025, General Border Committee (GBC) Joint Statement, saying Bangkok is misinterpreting the agreement while continuing unilateral actions on the ground.

The response came after Thailand’s Joint Information Centre on the Thailand-Cambodia Situation (JIC) rejected Cambodia’s accusation that Thai activities along the border violated Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Thailand maintained that its actions were consistent with the Joint Statement adopted at the Third Extraordinary GBC meeting and were intended to maintain security, reduce tensions and prevent military confrontations.

Responding to the statement, the Cambodian official said Thailand was attempting to distort both the content and intent of the December 27 Joint Statement.

“The Joint Statement does not authorise either side to create a fait accompli on the ground by constructing military infrastructure, installing barbed-wire fences, shipping containers, military posts or carrying out any activities that reinforce the occupation of another country’s territory,” the official said.

“The claim that these activities are carried out under the Joint Statement is a unilateral interpretation that is unacceptable.”

The official added that international law does not permit any country to acquire sovereignty or territorial advantage through the use of force or by creating facts on the ground.

The official also rejected Thailand’s call for Cambodia to rely on bilateral mechanisms, saying Bangkok has repeatedly delayed and obstructed the work of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).

“Calling on Cambodia to use bilateral mechanisms while Thailand continues to delay the JBC process and pursue unilateral activities on the ground is clearly contradictory,” the official said.

Reaffirming Cambodia’s position, the official said the Kingdom remains committed to resolving all outstanding border issues peacefully in accordance with international law, existing border treaties and agreed bilateral mechanisms.

The official also urged Thailand to halt activities that could alter the status quo along the border, respect both the spirit and the substance of the December 27 Joint Statement, and send its JBC delegation to resume border demarcation and marker installation work without further delay.
