I wish to respond to reports by Thai media outlet Khaosod English regarding Thailand’s Fine Arts Department registration of what they call the Ta Muen and Ta Kwai temple complexes in what they consider part of Surin province as national monuments.

I, along with many people around the world, welcome and appreciate efforts to preserve and carefully restore these valuable cultural heritage sites, although it should be recalled that Ta Krabei temple was struck by the Thai military on December 8, 2025.

However, Thailand should exercise caution in presenting or claiming these sites as unquestionably belonging to Thailand, because the disputed border areas between Cambodia and Thailand have never been fully and finally settled under international law. Historical records and internationally recognised maps should be carefully examined to determine clearly to which country these sites legally belong.

The preservation of ancient heritage should be carried out with respect for historical truth, international law and good relations between neighbouring countries. Cultural heritage should serve to unite humanity, not become a tool for territorial claims or political nationalism.

Many observers believe that parts of these areas remain disputed and that Thailand’s occupation or administrative actions in zones claimed by Cambodia continue to raise serious international concerns. Actions that appear to ignore unresolved border issues may damage Thailand’s image before the international community and undermine the spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between neighbouring nations.

Protecting heritage is admirable, but doing so while respecting international law and the sovereignty concerns of neighbouring countries is equally important.

Tesh Chanthorn is a Cambodian citizen who longs for peace. The views and opinions expressed are his own.
