Synopsis: Phnom Penh stays on diplomatic path towards resolution of border conflict with Thailand, while calling for the December 27 GBC joint statement to be respected.

Cambodia repeated its commitment to resolving boundary issues with Thailand through diplomacy and legal channels while urging Bangkok to fully uphold the ceasefire, as thousands of displaced citizens stream home amid lingering concerns about security and fears of renewed fighting.

In a statement yesterday, the Government Spokesperson Unit called on Thailand to fully implement the ceasefire agreement and peace deal signed between the two states.

“Cambodia calls on Thailand to fully and in good faith implement all the provisions of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special GBC Meeting of 27 December 2025, and relevant agreements.

Cambodia reaffirms its commitment to resolving border and boundary issues with Thailand peacefully, in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements while firmly upholding the principle that borders must not be altered,” said the statement.

It said it is important to note that the December 27 Joint Statement for peace was agreed upon as a comprehensive and mutually reinforcing framework with the primary objectives of de-escalating the situation, protecting and restoring normal civilian life, and achieving the peaceful resolution of disputes.

According to the Interior Ministry, as of yesterday, 3,041 more displaced persons had returned to their homes. This meant that out of the 640,000 people who were displaced by the conflict, about 510,000 people have reintegrated into their communities. This leaves 134,731 people, including 70,460 women and 43,903 children, at the displacement camps.

Thailand’s Defence Minister Natthaphol Nakpanich has warned of a third military assault on Cambodia if it fails to comply with the existing agreements, while stressing that Thailand continues to prioritise a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

Gen Natthaphol said there is a risk of renewed fighting if agreed measures are not respected. He added that the preservation of calm and cooperation between both sides would prevent further conflict.

In a special address on January 10, Prime Minister Hun Manet had expressed concern over the hardships faced by the population, particularly communities living along the border.

He stressed that Cambodia will continue to rely on diplomatic mechanisms and international legal frameworks to safeguard its territorial integrity, in line with previously agreed joint statements reached in late 2025.
