As Cambodia prepares to honour Canada’s National Day on July 1, we celebrate not only the birth of a great nation but also the deep bonds of friendship that unite our two countries. Canada Day marks the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation in 1867, a moment when diverse provinces came together to build a sovereign, democratic and prosperous federation. In the spirit of unity and mutual respect, Cambodia warmly joins this celebration, recognising Canada as a steadfast partner in peace, development and regional stability.

The bilateral relationship between Canada and Cambodia spans many decades, rooted in shared commitments to international peace and multilateralism. Canada’s involvement dates back to the Indochina conflict era, when it participated in the International Control Commission established in 1953. This early engagement laid the foundation for Canada’s continued support for Cambodia’s stability. Canada was also a key party to the 1991 Paris Peace Accords, which helped bring an end to decades of devastating conflict and paved the way for Cambodia’s remarkable recovery and reintegration into the international community.

These historical ties reflect a mutual dedication to sovereignty, reconciliation and peaceful resolution of disputes. Both Canada and Cambodia understand the challenges of navigating complex regional environments. Like Cambodia, which shares borders with neighbours and faces occasional provocations and jealousies that test regional harmony, Canada too operates in a dynamic geopolitical landscape where larger powers and competing interests can create pressures. Yet both nations prioritise dialogue, respect for international law and constructive engagement over confrontation. This shared experience of safeguarding national interests while promoting stability with neighbours strengthens our solidarity and underscores the value of principled diplomacy in an interconnected world.

Since 1993, Canada has maintained a diplomatic presence in Phnom Penh. A significant milestone came in March 2025, when Canada upgraded its mission to a full embassy as part of its Indo-Pacific Strategy. This upgrade signals a deepened commitment to engagement across political, economic, development and security domains. Cambodia, for its part, manages representation in Canada through its mission to the United Nations in New York. These channels facilitate dialogue and cooperation on issues of mutual interest.

People-to-people ties further enrich this relationship. Today, there are over 41,900 Canadians of Cambodian descent, many of whom contribute vibrantly to Canadian society while maintaining strong cultural links to their heritage. These communities serve as living bridges, fostering greater understanding and goodwill between our nations. Cambodian Canadians enrich Canada’s multicultural fabric, bringing traditions, cuisine and resilience that echo Cambodia’s own journey of renewal.

Canada’s engagement with Cambodia focuses on key priorities: strengthening democracy and governance, promoting human rights and the rule of law, supporting sustainable economic growth, enhancing food security and advancing global and regional security. Through development cooperation, Canada has supported initiatives that empower communities, improve livelihoods and build institutional capacity. This partnership aligns with Cambodia’s own vision of inclusive development and long-term prosperity.

Trade and economic partnership
Economic relations form a dynamic pillar of Canada-Cambodia ties. Bilateral merchandise trade reached $2.4 billion in 2024, marking a healthy increase from $2.1 billion in 2023. Canada stands as one of Cambodia’s top export destinations, offering vital market access for Cambodian goods. Cambodia benefits significantly from Canada’s Market Access Initiative for least developed countries, which provides quota-free and duty-free entry to the Canadian market. This preferential treatment has boosted Cambodian exports, particularly in apparel, footwear and textiles, which dominate imports into Canada (reaching approximately $2.3 billion in 2024).

Canadian exports to Cambodia, valued at $33.4 million in 2024, include vehicles, fur skins, mineral ores and meat products. These flows support Cambodia’s infrastructure, industry and consumer needs. Canadian direct investment abroad in Cambodia reached $2.9 billion in 2024, reflecting growing confidence in Cambodia’s economic potential across sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture and services. Recent high-level engagements, including meetings between Cambodian leadership and Canadian officials in 2025 and 2026, have emphasised further expansion in trade, investment and economic integration.

This commercial momentum demonstrates how our countries complement each other: Cambodia’s growing manufacturing base pairs well with Canada’s advanced industries and resources. As both nations pursue sustainable and resilient growth, opportunities abound in areas like clean technology, agribusiness, education and digital economy collaboration.

Beyond economics, cooperation extends to regional security and multilateral forums. Canada and Cambodia engage within ASEAN-related mechanisms and other platforms to address transnational challenges, including climate change, food security and maritime stability. Both countries advocate for a rules-based international order, where smaller and middle powers can thrive without undue external interference.

Shared values and vision for the future
At the heart of Canada-Cambodia relations lie shared values of peace, inclusivity and human development. Canada’s emphasis on multiculturalism and reconciliation resonates with Cambodia’s efforts to heal historical wounds and build a forward-looking society. Both nations cherish sovereignty and territorial integrity while working collaboratively with neighbours and global partners.

As Cambodia celebrates Canada Day, we reflect on how this friendship has evolved from post-conflict support to a mature, multifaceted partnership. The upgrade of the Canadian mission in Cambodia to a full embassy last year opens new avenues for cultural exchanges, educational partnerships, tourism and joint ventures. Cambodian students in Canada and Canadian visitors to Cambodia’s temples and vibrant cities strengthen these bonds daily.

Looking ahead, the relationship holds immense promise. With continued focus on sustainable development, green growth, and inclusive prosperity, Canada and Cambodia can contribute positively to Indo-Pacific stability and global challenges. By addressing shared concerns—such as navigating regional dynamics marked by competition and occasional provocations—our countries exemplify how dialogue and mutual benefit can overcome difficulties.
