Lao Officers Join ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, July 23, 2026 —
Two officers from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have joined the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in Cambodia to help observe and verify the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border following the implementation of the ceasefire.
According to a statement issued by the Spokeswoman of Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence on July 23, officers from the Department of International Relations and the Cambodia Liaison Group (CLG) warmly welcomed the deployment of Lt. Col. KHAMPHET FONGLAMAY and Lt. Col. SINGSAVAN VONGSOUVANH at 1:00 p.m.
The ASEAN Observer Team is led by the Philippines, the rotating ASEAN Chair, and is tasked with observing and verifying the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border after the ceasefire took effect.
The statement reaffirmed Cambodia’s full support for the work of the ASEAN Observer Team in ensuring the implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. It noted that the team’s presence helps promote transparency, build mutual trust, and protect the lives of citizens.
Cambodia also reiterated its readiness to welcome friendly countries to deploy observers or participate in peace-building efforts.
The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed their firm, sincere and unwavering commitment to fully and faithfully implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) adopted on Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand signed on Oct. 26, 2025, and all other relevant agreements.
The statement said the commitment aims to ensure a rapid recovery, restore normalcy, and promote lasting peace and stability.
