Cambodia and Canada Commit to Strengthening and Deepening Relations
On the morning of 20 April 2026, HUN Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received a courtesy call from His Excellency Christian DesRoches, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Peace Palace.
During the meeting, His Excellency the Ambassador spoke highly of the long-standing diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Canada and highlighted the progress in bilateral relations, particularly in Canadian trade and investment in Cambodia. He emphasised Canada’s commitment to further deepening cooperation between the two countries, especially in the trade and economic sectors. Furthermore, His Excellency the Ambassador underlined Canada’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s successful hosting of the upcoming 20th Francophonie Summit, confirming that a high-level Canadian delegation would attend the event. Regarding regional cooperation, His Excellency the Ambassador thanked Cambodia for its support in promoting Canada–Association of Southeast Asian Nations economic cooperation and negotiations for the ASEAN–Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), which is expected to be finalised and signed in the near future.
In response, Samdech Thipadei congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment and expressed confidence that, during his diplomatic mandate, bilateral relations and cooperation would continue to grow stronger and deeper. Samdech Thipadei thanked Canada for its significant contributions to Cambodia’s peace process and its socio-economic recovery and development. He spoke highly of the growing ties and the potential for expanding cooperation, highlighting the Cambodian community in Canada as an important bridge to boost Cambodia–Canada relations, particularly in trade and economy. Samdech Thipadei added that the Royal Government of Cambodia had previously instructed the Ministry of Commerce and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce to establish a representative office in Canada to facilitate economic cooperation and explore new opportunities to increase trade volume and investment. He reaffirmed the Royal Government’s readiness to continue strengthening relations and cooperation between Cambodia and Canada in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
Samdech Thipadei and His Excellency the Ambassador also discussed enhancing cooperation in several key areas, including trade, investment, and the economy; defence and security; and combating transnational crime.
