Cambodia Reaffirms Sincere Commitment to Peace Accord Amid Thailand’s Unilateral Suspension
Cambodia has reaffirmed its sincerity and unwavering commitment to the peace accord signed with Thailand, despite reports suggesting that Bangkok has suspended the implementation of the “Joint Declaration” following a border landmine incident.
In a statement released late Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed grave concern over several media reports quoting Thai leaders as saying that Thailand had halted the accord signed in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October 2025.
The “Joint Declaration” was signed by the Prime Ministers of both countries and witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as ASEAN Chair. The accord was widely praised by the international community as a significant step toward lasting peace and stability along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
According to reports, Thailand cited a landmine explosion on 10 November in the Phnom Trop area near Cambodia’s Temple of Preah Vihear—which injured three Thai soldiers—as justification for suspending the peace agreement and cancelling the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers scheduled for 12 November.
It explained that most minefields in the area are remnants of nearly three decades of civil wars in Cambodia during the 1970s and 1980s, noting that large portions of the border remain uncleared due to difficult terrain and the un-demarcated status of certain areas.
The statement reaffirmed Cambodia’s full commitment to implementing the Joint Declaration in good faith, underscoring that the country remains a devoted advocate for global peace and disarmament.
“Cambodia, as a devoted advocate for and state party to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, has never used any new landmines and will never do so,” the statement said.
