Prime Minister Hun Manet today commemorated the ninth anniversary of the inscription of the Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Zone on the UNESCO World Heritage List, calling on all Cambodians to continue protecting the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

In a message posted on his official social media page to mark the anniversary of the site’s inscription on July 8, 2017, he stressed that “Safeguarding our cultural heritage is a shared duty of all Cambodians.”

Mr Hun Manet noted that zone, formerly known as Ishanapura, served as the capital of the ancient Khmer Kingdom during the Chenla period and is in Prasat Sambor district, Kampong Thom province.

The temple complex was constructed between the late sixth and eighth centuries during the reign of King Isanavarman and consists of three principal temple groups: the Sambor Temple Group (Northern), the Central Temple Group (Prasat Tao), and the Southern Temple Group (Yeai Poan or Neak Poan Temple).

He recalled that Sambor Prei Kuk was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee held in Kraków, Poland in 2017, in recognition of its outstanding universal value and significance to world heritage.
