Cambodia and Canada recently staged discussions to explore ways to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, education, tourism and other sectors, as bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $1.3 billion in 2025.

The “Second Session of Bilateral Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Global Affairs Canada” was held in Phnom Penh on February 12. The meeting was co-chaired by Meas Kim Heng, foreign ministry secretary of state, and Alan Bowman, director-general for Southeast Asia and Oceania at Global Affairs Canada.

According to the foreign ministry, both sides underscored the importance of the consultation mechanism and recalled the positive outcomes of the first Bilateral Consultations, held in Ottawa in September 2024. They also noted the progress made since then.

They reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and existing areas of cooperation, while exploring new opportunities with untapped potential. The two sides also exchanged views on political and economic developments in their respective countries and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in trade and investment, education, tourism, defence and security, demining, human rights and good governance, as well as other fields of mutual interest.

“On the multilateral front, both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation within the UN framework, including mutual support for candidatures in international organisations,” said the ministry.

The General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) reported that in 2025, total trade between the two countries amounted to $1.33 billion, up 14% over 2024. Cambodia exported $1.27 billion in goods to Canada, up 14.6%, while importing $63.41 million, up 3.1%.

Canada is Cambodia’s seventh-largest trading partner, following China, the US, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and Singapore.
