Statement On Ceasefire and Peace Between Cambodia and Thailand
The Asian Vision Institute (AVI) wholeheartedly welcomes the immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand reached in Putrajaya, Malaysia on 28 July 2025 at the Special Meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Chair of ASEAN. The entry into effect of the ceasefire at midnight marks a turning point in ASEAN unity and centrality on the basis of peace through dialogue, diplomacy, international law and justice.
We highly appreciate the leadership of the Malaysian Prime Minister, the Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and the Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for their sincere goodwill and groundbreaking efforts toward the peace truce. We are also grateful to President Donald Trump and the participation of the People’s Republic of China in facilitating and monitoring the peace talk. We are thankful to world leaders, including from Japan and the United Kingdom, for their support for the ceasefire. Indeed, this pivotal milestone reflects a strong and sincere regional and international commitment to restoring peace, stability, and dialogue in the Cambodian–Thai border region.
AVI sincerely express the deep condolences to the families of the civilian victims and soldiers on both sides for the losses of their compatriots to this unfortunate, unnecessary, and avoidable conflict. We pray for a quick recovery for the casualties. For the dislocated refugees, we call for adequate, responsible and comprehensive humanitarian responses from the government and civil society organisations, including the United Nations, the ASEAN, regional stakeholders and other humanitarian organisations to deliver urgent reliefs, including food, shelter, and basic necessities in the conflict areas.
While we condemn the act of Thai aggression and violation of the international law, other prevailing treaties and conventions, such as the use of cluster bombs and hybrid warfare, we commend the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Royal Government of Thailand for their commitment to peace. We urge both parties to fully implement the ceasefire and resolve disputes peacefully in line with international law with the Charter of the United Nations at its core. AVI also calls on the international community to join and objectively monitor the implementation efforts and to safeguard the cultural heritage sites, including the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear Temple and other cultural temples in Cambodia which were under heavy artillery and bomb attacks by the Thai army.
AVI reaffirms its dedication to joining the peace-loving global community to advance peace, security, stability, and respect for sovereignty and territory integrity of nations. This ceasefire is an important step toward rebuilding trust, mitigating humanitarian challenges, fostering dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand and solidifying international momentum in global peace, development, sustainability and recovery.
