Khmer Times | Dear Editor,
All Cambodians – especially the younger generation – should make it a priority to visit the ancient temples along the Cambodian-Thai border, such as Ta Moan Thom, Ta Krabei, and Ta Moan Tauch.

These sacred sites are not only remarkable pieces of our cultural heritage but also powerful symbols of national pride and resilience. Visiting them offers much-needed moral support to the brave soldiers stationed there, who dedicate themselves to safeguarding our territorial integrity.

These temples, built by our ancestors, are more than just stone and history – they are the soul of our nation. They were passed down through generations, and it is our responsibility to preserve and cherish them.

From Preah Vihear to Banteay Meanchey provinces, ancient temples dot the borderlands, standing as silent witnesses to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire and the enduring spirit of Cambodia.

Educational institutions, particularly schools, should organise trips for students to visit these border areas. Exploring temples like Ta Moan Thom and Ta Krabei will not only deepen students’ appreciation for their heritage but also connect them to the Ancient Khmer Highway – a critical route that once linked Angkor to Phimai in present-day Thailand. Such visits serve as powerful lessons in history, culture, and identity.

Additionally, heritage sites like Banteay Chhmar Temple in Banteay Meanchey offer further opportunities for cultural immersion. These places bring history to life and foster a sense of pride and ownership among the youth.

Parents play a vital role too. They should encourage their children to learn about and love Cambodia’s cultural treasures. Understanding the priceless value of these ancient sites helps instill a strong sense of national identity and duty to protect what has been passed down to us.

Private tours should also be encouraged and arranged to make it easier for the general public–especially those living in the eastern and southern regions of the country–to visit these heritage sites.

With improved road networks and easier access along the Cambodia-Thailand border, traveling to these temples has become more convenient. For the more adventurous, the route also offers an exciting opportunity to explore the area by motorbike, adding a sense of discovery to the journey.

When Cambodians visit these temples and greet the soldiers stationed there, it sends a powerful message: You are not alone. We are with you. Seeing our people show up brings joy and motivation to our troops. It reminds them that their sacrifices are deeply appreciated, and that they are an essential part of our national family.

Ultimately, the temples are not just ruins – they are living legacies. By visiting them, we honour the souls of our ancestors. And surely, they would be proud to see their descendants continuing to care for and celebrate the heritage they left behind.
