Opinion: Assault at Ta Mone Thom Temple: Thailand’s Provocation Threatens Regional Peace Opinion: Assault at Ta Mone Thom Temple: Thailand’s Provocation Threatens Regional Peace

On July 13, a shocking and unacceptable act of aggression unfolded at the sacred Ta Mone Thom Temple in Cambodia soil, along the Cambodia–Thailand border. A Thai citizen and a Thai soldier physically assaulted a Cambodian soldier who was stationed at the temple—an incident that represents not only a violent act against an individual, but a direct affront to Cambodia’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and commitment to peace. This was not an accident. It was a deliberate act of provocation.

What the Thai army and Thai citizens did to the Cambodian soldiers was an act of utmost cowardice, revealing Thailand’s complete lack of shame in committing such despicable actions.

Despite repeated Thai claims of peaceful intentions and diplomatic engagement, actions on the ground tell a different story. Thai military personnel—sometimes accompanied by civilians—have consistently engaged in intimidation, incursions, and now open violence against Cambodian forces and heritage sites. These actions directly contradict Thailand’s official narrative and paint a grim picture of its true intentions.

Ta Mone Thom Temple is not just a religious or historical site—it is a symbol of Khmer civilization and Cambodian national identity. Any assault on its defenders is an assault on our nation.

Cambodia has always chosen the path of peace. From the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to multilateral diplomacy, Cambodia has shown its deep respect for international law, dialogue, and non-violence. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Cambodia continues to prioritize peaceful dispute resolution and regional stability.

Yet Thailand’s actions repeatedly undermine that peace. From border closures to armed intimidation, and now physical attacks, Thailand continues to escalate tensions. This incident is not an isolated event—it is part of a dangerous pattern of provocation.

Let the facts be clear: A Cambodian soldier was assaulted on Cambodian territory. The attackers were Thai—a soldier and a civilian. The location was a protected religious and historical site. If conflict arises in the future, history will record that it was Thailand—not Cambodia—that lit the match. It was Thailand that refused international law, rejected peaceful coexistence, and violated the fundamental principles of neighborly respect.

The international community must not remain silent. Violence at a cultural and religious monument like Ta Mone Thom Temple is not just a bilateral issue—it is a matter of international concern. Cambodia calls on global institutions, allies, and peace-loving nations to condemn this provocation and demand accountability from the Thai government.

We urge Thailand to immediately investigate this assault, discipline those responsible, and take concrete steps to prevent further escalation. Respecting borders is not a favor—it is an obligation under international law.

Cambodia’s commitment to peace should not be mistaken for passivity. We will defend our land, our dignity, and our people through every lawful and moral means available. This is our sovereign right. Cambodia chooses peace. Thailand continues to choose provocation.
