Established by France to finance economic activities in Indochina, the Piaster was issued from 1878 by the Bank of Indochina and circulated in Tonkin, Anam, Cochinchina, Laos and Cambodia. In 1952, issuing authority was transferred to the Issuing Institute of the Indochinese Associated States until the establishment of the National Bank of Cambodia in 1954 and the creation of the riel in 1955.
