The chief of Malaysia’s defence forces is leading a senior military delegation, accompanied by members of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), on a visit to Cambodia’s western border this afternoon, July 8. He will inspect an area where Phnom Penh says Thai forces have encroached on its territory, in the latest sign of ASEAN’s growing role in monitoring the border situation.

The visit to the Boeung Trakaun border crossing in Banteay Meanchey province comes as Cambodia continues to seek greater regional engagement in documenting developments along the disputed frontier, following clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces last year.

According to a statement released by the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) High Command, General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Haji Mohd Nizam Jaffar is paying an official July 8 to 11 visit, at the invitation of Cambodian Commander-in-Chief General Vong Pisen.

The border inspection was expected to be one of the highest-profile ASEAN observation missions since the monitoring mechanism was established following the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire agreement reached late last year.

Cambodian authorities have repeatedly invited AOT members to inspect disputed locations, arguing that on-site verification provides independent assessments of conditions along the frontier.

The Boeung Trakaun area has remained one of the most sensitive sections of the border, with Cambodia maintaining that Thai troops advanced hundreds of metres into Cambodian territory during last year’s fighting and continue to occupy several areas, despite the ceasefire.

The Malaysian delegation will also hold courtesy meetings with defence minister Tea Seiha and Senate president Hun Sen.

Pisen and Mohd Nizam will also hold bilateral talks aimed at expanding military cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia.

According to the RCAF High Command, the discussions will focus on strengthening existing cooperation and identifying new practical measures to deepen collaboration.

The high command described the visit as “an important new step” demonstrating the commitment of the two commanders to further strengthening friendship and defence cooperation.

Beyond bilateral defence ties, the border inspection underscores Malaysia’s active role in ASEAN’s efforts to support transparency and confidence-building along the Cambodia-Thailand frontier.

Malaysia joins other ASEAN members participating in the observer mechanism, which has carried out several field missions in recent months to disputed areas along the border.

Earlier this week, the Cambodian Liaison Group facilitated a visit by the ASEAN Observer Team to Border Pillars 52 to 59 in Battambang province, where the observers inspected Cambodia’s claims of unilateral Thai fence construction, damaged temporary border markers and agricultural activities by Thai nationals in disputed areas.

Previous observer missions have also visited displacement sites in Banteay Meanchey and other border sectors affected by the conflict.

Cambodia has consistently maintained that ASEAN’s presence contributes to greater transparency while supporting implementation of the ceasefire agreement and reducing the risk of renewed tensions along the shared border.

Wednesday’s inspection at Boeung Trakaun is expected to further reinforce ASEAN’s monitoring role as diplomatic efforts continue alongside bilateral mechanisms aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution of the longstanding border dispute.
