Myanmar leader backs Kingdom’s ‘peaceful, law-based’ stance on Thai border dispute

The leader of Myanmar has voiced strong support for Cambodia’s stance on resolving its border dispute with Thailand. Cambodia has repeatedly reiterated the importance of strict adherence to international law and bilateral agreements.

Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing met with Senate president Hun Sen, acting head of state,during his September 11-12 state visit to the Kingdom.

Following the meeting, Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith told media that Hun Sen briefed the visiting leader on the ongoing border issue.

“The border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, triggered by Thai incursions into Cambodian territory, is a matter of international concern. Therefore, it cannot escape the attention of any foreign leader visiting Cambodia,” Thyrith said.

“It is vital for Cambodia’s leadership to raise this issue of territorial encroachment to clarify the historical context and the actual reality on the ground regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border.

“Hun Sen explained Cambodia’s principles to Min Aung Hlaing. Even though the two nations currently remain in dispute and Thailand illegally occupies Cambodian land, the Cambodian government continues to rely on peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms, with international law as the absolute foundation,” he added.

He noted that Hun Sen made it clear to the Myanmar leader that Cambodia resolutely opposes any occupation of its sovereign territory through the use of military force.

“Min Aung Hlaing expressed strong support during the meeting. He fully backs Cambodia’s position to resolve the border conflict with Thailand peacefully based on international law,” Thyrith said.

“He also expressed hope that the border situation will soon return to normalcy, bringing stability and peace back to the shared frontier,” he added.
