Acting Head of State Hun Sen has urged citizens to exercise extra caution on the roads, warning that fatigue caused by late-night World Cup viewing significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents.

In a social media post yesterday, Mr Hun Sen remarked on the unpredictable nature of the tournament, noting that the sport has once again proven that the ball is round after South American and North African underdogs eliminated two traditionally powerhouse European teams.

Mr Hun Sen pointed out that the ongoing tournament has disrupted daily routines in Cambodia, as most matches are broadcast deep into the night and early morning.

“During the 2026 World Cup, many people who work in the morning are less energetic because they stay up late watching football,” Mr Hun Sen wrote. “The matches kick off after midnight and continue until around 10am.”

With football fever gripping the nation despite the time difference, Mr Hun Sen strongly urged drivers of all vehicles to prioritise safety and avoid driving while drowsy. AKP
