Regarding Cambodia’s Stance on Repeated Illegal Actions by Thai Armed Forces
April 6, 2026
Q1: What is Cambodia’s stance on the repeated illegal actions of Thai armed forces in illegally occupied areas?
A: As always, Cambodia has consistently lodged official protests against illegal actions in Cambodian territory illegally seized and occupied by Thai troops. On April 5, 2026, Cambodia filed another protest following repeated illegal actions by Thai armed forces in Sra Em commune, Preah Vihear province, including land-clearing near the Preah Vihear temple area, north of Keo Sikha Kiri Svara pagoda, the installation of approximately 100 meters of barbed wire, and the deployment of armored personnel vehicles in the Bosbov–Choam Tae area. These actions do not constitute self-defense as claimed by the Thai side, nor are they in compliance with existing agreements, including the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC). Rather, they constitute violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which are prohibited under international law.
Q2: How do Thailand’s continued acts of aggression affect the peaceful resolution of the dispute?
A: Thailand’s aggressive and illegal actions could escalate tensions in the border area and cause fear among civilians. Such tensions and acts of aggression could disrupt bilateral meetings and dialogues aimed at resolving the dispute peacefully and in accordance with international law. Consequently, these actions could create difficulties in building mutual trust and could delay a long-term peaceful solution between Cambodia and Thailand. These unilateral actions must not be allowed to affect the international boundary between the two countries, as the Cambodia-Thailand border is an international boundary already recognized by both parties. Therefore, only negotiation and survey through the JBC mechanism can achieve a genuine solution.
Q3: What does Cambodia demand from the Thai side in the current border situation?
A: Cambodia demands that the Thai side immediately cease all illegal actions, including the implementation of unilateral actions that could create a
fait accompli. Cambodia also calls for the implementation of tension-reduction measures and full respect for existing agreements and mechanisms, including the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC). At the same time, Cambodia affirms that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is a fundamental principle that cannot be violated, and all disputes should be resolved peacefully. Therefore, Cambodia demands that the Thai side utilize the JBC mechanism, which is the only and best option for resolving border issues between the two countries.
