Japan Welcomes Cambodia’s Ratification of UNCLOS

Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi on January 30 welcomed Cambodia’s completion of the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), calling it a vital step for international law and freedom of navigation, while expressing hope that Cambodia and Thailand will peacefully resolve their land border issues through dialogue to support regional stability and economic activity.

Ambassador Ueno said:

I’m very happy. I’m very glad to hear that Cambodia finally ratified or completed the process for the ratification of UNCLOS, because Japan is a country who has been working on the ratification of UNCLOS to Cambodia, because UNCLOS is one of the most basic international law, and Cambodia has no reason not to ratify this UNCLOS, so with this news that Cambodia finalizes the process of ratification of UNCLOS, we really welcome it, and we work together with Cambodia for the freedom of navigation or freedom of ocean with this UNCLOS.

First of all, this is a matter which should be decided by both Cambodia and Thai government, so Japan is not in a position to force them to reopen, but the land border between Cambodia and Thailand actually is very important for the land transportation, and the land transportation between Cambodia and Thailand is very crucial or true for the Japanese companies who have been investing both in Thailand and Cambodia.

So once again we don’t demand the Cambodia and Thai government to reopen the land border, but we wish, humbly wish that the border issue will be resolved, peacefully through the dialogue, and as a result of that land border between Thailand and Cambodia will reopen sometimes soon.
