Cambodian people across the country and abroad jubilantly welcomed the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers who were freed by the Thai military on December 31.

Following their release, messages of congratulations and relief poured in from Cambodians nationwide and overseas. Just a few hours later, the soldiers met with Prime Minister Hun Manet in Phnom Penh.

Addressing the soldiers, Prime Minister Hun Manet said, “Although it has been a while, we will never forget you.”

He noted that the soldiers had returned to Cambodia after being under Thai custody for 155 days. He emphasized that the Royal Government of Cambodia fulfilled three key obligations toward them: ensuring their lives, ensuring their safety, and working to secure their freedom.

Among those welcoming the soldiers was Pak Dana, a resident of Chom Chao commune.

“I have been happy since the morning, just seeing the news that they have returned. My tears flowed without warning and kept flowing. I strongly support the efforts made to bring our brothers back. They worked very hard, and now that they have returned, we are extremely excited. On the occasion of the New Year, I wish all the brave soldiers good health, safety, and success in all their endeavors. Please take care of yourselves and remain united for the sake of our nation.

Vath Sievnan, a student at Hun Sen Champovoan General and Technical High School, also expressed her joy.

“I feel happy that our soldiers have returned to our country and reunited with their families. They were gone for a long time, and many say they sacrificed greatly before returning. We are truly happy that the whole country is celebrating. I hope the conflict will end soon, because if it continues, people living along the border will suffer, students will struggle to study, and families will be forced to live far from their homes. On the occasion of the New Year, I wish the soldiers good health, happy families, and better lives.

Another Chom Chao resident, Kong Chimtha, shared similar sentiments.

“I feel very happy, excited, and grateful to the government and officials at all levels for bringing our brave soldiers back to our land. I wish them good health and success in the New Year, and I hope all soldiers will be free from suffering. More than anything, I want peace. Today, I pray that our country will have peace, that war will end, and that future generations can live happily.
