Q1: What is Cambodia’s stance on Thailand’s recent violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity?

A: Cambodia strongly opposes Thailand’s violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Specifically, the construction of new military bunkers in the Thmor Da International Border Checkpoint area on August 6, 2026, and the announcement of Thailand’s plan to expand its power grid to the area of Ta Krabey Temple as well as Hill 333 on August 7, 2026, are actions that Cambodia considers attempts to consolidate the illegal occupation of Cambodian territory. Cambodia reiterates that these areas are within its sovereign territory and does not recognize Thailand’s unilateral border demarcation aimed at occupying territory.

Q2: What agreements do these actions contradict?

A: These actions contradict Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding concerning land border survey and demarcation between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as Item I on de-escalation measures outlined in the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee, dated December 27, 2025

Q3: What measures does Cambodia demand that Thailand implement?

A: Cambodia demands that Thailand immediately cease construction and other activities in areas that Cambodia considers illegally occupied, and halt all unilateral actions that could escalate tensions. Cambodia calls on both parties to continue resolving the issue peacefully, in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements, particularly through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), to clearly demarcate the border with the aim of restoring peace, stability, and good neighborly relations along the border.
