Hun Sen warns Northeastern governors over online scam crackdown

Acting Head of State Hun Sen said that online scam groups have recently set up small bases in the northeastern provinces, particularly Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, after a strong crackdown in border provinces, Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk, and several others.
Following the removal of the police chief and military police commander, and the transfer of the Mondulkiri governor, Mr Hun Sen also warned that the Ratanakiri governor could face resignation if effective measures are not taken to eliminate online scam operations.
Mr Hun Sen made the remarks during a meeting with leaders of ministries, institutions, councils, districts, communes, departments, and units under the Phnom Penh administration on May 24.
He said:
The governors of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, along with the police chiefs and military police commanders, are all required to prepare to eliminate all locations where online scams are operating.
Ratanakiri province also has online scam activity. The governor of Ratanakiri is ready. If you do not clean it up, you will be removed from office. I am not dismissing you on behalf of the minister, but as the president of the ruling party, I have the authority to speak. The police chief, the military police commander in Ratanakiri, and the governor of Ratanakiri must be ready to act and eliminate these operations wherever online scams are found.”
