To the Editor of The Wall Street Journal,

I write to express my deep concern regarding the use of the term “Scambodia” in a recent headline.

While Cambodia, like many nations, faces complex challenges — including the serious issue of scams — these matters deserve careful, fact-based reporting and thoughtful analysis. The use of a derogatory pun to frame such coverage falls short of the standards of rigor, balance and professionalism for which your publication is widely respected.

Language plays a critical role in journalism. A headline is not merely an attention-grabbing device; it shapes perception and frames understanding. In this instance, the wording reduces an entire country, its people and its ongoing development into a dismissive stereotype. Such characterisation is neither precise nor fair.

Responsible journalism should illuminate complexity rather than obscure it through sensationalism or generalisation. Cambodia deserves coverage grounded in accuracy, context and respect.

As a reader who values credible and principled journalism, I find this editorial choice disappointing and inconsistent with the standards that have long defined your institution.

On behalf of Cambodia, I respectfully urge you to reconsider this framing and to make the appropriate correction.

Sincerely,
Tesh Chanthorn, Cambodian citizen.
