Cambodia warns of extreme heat, urges public vigilance against fires

Ministry of Environment has warned of rising temperatures across the country and urged the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of house and forest fires.
In a statement issued today, the ministry said temperatures are increasing nationwide, raising the risk of fire incidents that could damage homes, property and natural resources.
According to the ministry, prolonged hot and dry weather expected over the coming weeks could increase the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly, particularly in residential areas, agricultural land and forest zones if proper precautions are not taken.
Authorities also called on citizens to avoid burning agricultural waste, rubbish or vegetation near homes, noting that even small sparks can quickly develop into large fires under extreme heat and strong winds.
The ministry previously warned that fires caused by negligence could spread to nearby houses, destroy property and threaten lives. Forest fires, meanwhile, can cause severe environmental damage and lead to the loss of biodiversity.
Residents are advised to ensure that cooking fires are fully extinguished after use, prevent flames from spreading near dry materials or waste, and ensure that electrical systems are used safely to reduce the risk of household fires.
The ministry also encouraged local authorities to strengthen monitoring and response measures, particularly in high-risk areas, in order to prevent small incidents escalating into large-scale fires.
Preventing fires, the ministry said, is essential not only to protect homes and livelihoods but also to reduce air pollution and safeguard public health during periods of extreme heat.
The ministry renewed its appeal for citizens to cooperate by following official guidance and safety measures on fire prevention, stressing that collective action is necessary to reduce the risk of fire disasters and ensure community safety during the dry season.
