Senate president Hun Sen reiterated Cambodia’s position regarding the ongoing border dispute with Thailand as he met with the newly appointed Singaporean ambassador, today, April 2.

As acting head of state, Hun Sen told ambassador Pang Chee Wee that Cambodia aims to maintain an effective, long-lasting ceasefire and resolve disputes through negotiations using existing mechanisms.

“Hun Sen took the opportunity to thank Singapore for its contribution, particularly for sending observers to monitor the Cambodia-Thailand border situation,” said senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith.

“He underlined to the Singaporean ambassador that Cambodia’s stance in resolving border issues with Thailand is to maintain an effective and long-lasting ceasefire,” he added.

During the meeting, Hun Sen and Chee Wee also discussed their commitment to further strengthening and expanding relations between Cambodia and Singapore, particularly in diplomacy, politics, trade, the economy and investment.

Chee Wee informed the Senate president that he would strive to mobilise additional Singaporean investment in Cambodia.

Despite Cambodia’s firm adherence to resolving border issues peacefully through existing mechanisms such as the JBC (Joint Border Committee) and GBC (General Border Committee), more than three months have passed since the December 27 ceasefire, such high-level meetings have not occurred, with Thai authorities requesting repeated postponements.
