Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said that Hun Sen, President of the Senate, has requested South Korea to provide information regarding a criminal who killed a South Korean student in Cambodia and was later arrested in Thailand.

The request was made during his meeting with Kim Changyong, the South Korean ambassador to Cambodia, at the Senate Palace on January 29.

Thyrith said Mr Hun Sen asked the ambassador to share detailed information about the suspect, noting his concern over how the criminal was able to deceive the South Korean student and carry out the crime in Cambodia.

Mr Hun Sen emphasized the need for transparency so Cambodia can better understand the nature and depth of the relationship involved, which is essential for effectively addressing such cases, particularly those linked to online crime.

Mr Hun Sen noted that Thailand and South Korea maintain strong cooperation in suppressing online crimes.

The ambassador said the South Korean president has praised the efforts of the Cambodian–South Korean joint task force in combating online crimes and that he would report the discussion to the South Korean government.

Mr Hun Sen added that Cambodia is actively cooperating with relevant countries because online crime is not solely a Cambodian issue but a regional and increasingly global problem.

He added that Cambodia’s ongoing crackdown on online crime is intended to send a clear message that the country is not a safe haven for criminals.
Cambodia is not a place for criminals to operate. For criminals, Cambodia is a hell, not a refuge, he added.
