A senior official from the committee tasked with eradicating technology-based scam crimes has informed a Chinese diplomat that Cambodia will cooperate with partner countries to “cut off the heads and dismantle the nests of criminal groups to the very root”.

Chhay Sinarith, Senior Minister in charge of Special Missions and head of the Secretariat of the Committee for Combating Technology Crimes (CCTC), shared the commitment with Chinese ambassador Wang Wenbin during a January 20 meeting.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia maintains a strong and specific stance on implementing measures to suppress and clear out locations and criminal groups involved in technology-based scams, as well as enforcing legal procedures against the ringleaders and their accomplices,” Sinarith was quoted as saying by the CCTC.

“Cambodia will continue its cooperation with partner countries to work together to implement consistent crackdown operations, aiming to cut off the heads and dismantle the nests of criminal groups to the root,” he warned.

Wang thanked Cambodia for its cooperation in arresting and deporting several Chinese ringleaders and their accomplices back to China to continue investigation and prosecution procedures.

According to the CCTC, Wang described the cooperation as a testament to the efforts as well as the tangible results of Cambodia in combating technology-based scams to the international community, as well as the excellent cooperation between Cambodian and Chinese authorities.

He believed that Cambodia has a clear plan and sufficient forces to combat technology-based scams, so the international community can trust that Cambodia is capable of eliminating these crimes.

“Wang has confidence in Cambodia’s commitment and capability to implement this work effectively, and the Chinese side is happy and always ready to cooperate and provide support to Cambodia to achieve the goal of cracking down on and clearing out technology-based scam activities from Cambodia,” said the CCTC.

Sinarith and Wang discussed the next steps in the cooperation to combat technology crimes.

On January 6, Cambodian and Chinese authorities cooperated to detain Chen Zhi, the head of a prominent online scam operation. He was deported to China to face charges the following day.

Chinese authorities stated that they will continue to bring in more individuals who are implicated.
