Thailand’s Border Provocations Invite Regional Embarrassment

The international community, the world at large, and ASEAN member states will likely find themselves laughing in disbelief after reading Khaosod English’s latest report. The report stated that:
“A group of vehicles with large sound systems gathered at Ban Nong Chan, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province, on Friday afternoon. They will hold an event broadcasting documentaries and other materials for those encroaching on Thai sovereign territory to listen to all day long. This activity will take place from October 17th until October 19th.”
Such actions are not only absurd but also reflect poorly on Thailand’s sense of regional diplomacy and responsibility as a member of ASEAN. Turning a sensitive border issue into a public spectacle — with loudspeakers and propaganda — makes a mockery of international norms and peaceful coexistence among neighbours.
For me, and surely for anyone reading this report, the question is clear: why doesn’t the Thai government bring the border issue to the UN, or resolve it in accordance with the Franco–Siamese Treaty, which already provides an established legal framework and map-based resolution?
Instead, the Thai government continues to allow both its military and civilians to engage in provocative acts along the border, disregarding peaceful means of settlement. Such behaviour not only undermines trust between Thailand and Cambodia but also discredits ASEAN’s principle of non-interference and peaceful dispute resolution.
