Vietnam Celebrates 80th Anniversary of the National Day in Phnom Penh, Hun Sen Attends Reception
The Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia hosted a reception on Thursday evening in Phnom Penh to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The event at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra was attended by Senate President Hun Sen, members of parliament and the Senate, senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives of the Cambodian–Vietnamese community.
In his welcome remarks, Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu recalled the historic moments that marked Vietnam’s struggle for independence.
“Eighty years ago, during these same days of August, the Vietnamese people successfully launched the glorious August Revolution,” he said. “On the 2nd of September 1945 at the historic Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh – the great, respected, and beloved leader of the Vietnamese people – solemnly read the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, which today is the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.”
He added that since then, Vietnam has undergone a “heroic and momentous journey” to defend sovereignty and build prosperity. “From a poor and war-ravaged colony in the 20th century, Viet Nam has risen vigorously over the past decades, transforming into a dynamic economy ranked among the 35 largest in the world,” he said.
Ambassador Minh Vu emphasised that Vietnam is determined to maintain high growth and achieve the goal of becoming an upper-middle-income, modern industrialised nation by 2030.
For his part, Mr Hun Sen, the President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), extended warm congratulations and best wishes to the leaders of the state, the party, and the fraternal people of Vietnam.
“Vietnam’s Independence Day 80 years ago was not only for the people of Vietnam but was also an inspiration for the nations in the Southeast Asian region, including Cambodia, to rise up and struggle for their independence from colonialism,” he said.
The celebration concluded with cultural performances, reflecting the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
