Cambodia PR Team Responses Regarding the Incident of Gunshots Heard Along the Border Area in Preah Vihear Province May 26, 2026

Q1: What measures has Cambodia taken regarding the incident of gunshots heard in the border area of Preah Vihear province on the night of May 24, 2026?

A: On May 25, 2026, the liaison team of Military Region 4 of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces made official contact with the Thailand’s Army Area 2 to inquire and verify the incident of 8 gunshots heard on the night of May 24, 2026, in the Phnom Trob and Phnom Sambok Khmum areas of Preah Vihear province. Cambodia demanded that the Thai side verify the incident and strictly enforce its military discipline in accordance with the Joint Statement of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) of December 27, 2025.

Q2: Is the allegation by the Thai side that Cambodian soldiers caused the disturbance and fired shots in the Phnom Trob area true?

A: The Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia completely rejects this allegation and considers it to be false information and a defamation without clear evidence. Cambodia affirms that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces have strictly adhered to military discipline and the implementation of existing agreements. Such allegations are an attempt to divert public opinion and to cover up actions carried out by the Thai side itself.

Q3: Why does the Thai side consistently accuse Cambodia of being the provocateur along the border?

A: The successive accusations from the Thai side are seen as an attempt to portray Cambodia as the provocateur in order to conceal its own actions and the facts occurring along the border from the international community. The dissemination of such baseless information and defamation not only undermines mutual trust between the two countries but could also escalate tensions and obstruct the process of peaceful resolution. Cambodia continues to adhere to the principle of resolving issues through diplomacy, international law, and mutually agreed mechanisms. The repeated dissemination of false information and defamatory accusations by the Thai side will not be believed by the general public nor by the international community, because it is widely recognized that it is inappropriate and unreasonable for the Cambodian side to carry out such actions.
