The spokesperson for Senate President Hun Sen has strongly condemned what he described as fake news reported by Thai media, dismissing claims by a Thai Defence Ministry spokesman that the Cambodian leader had requested the reopening of the Thai-Cambodian border.

The Nation Thailand reported today, quoting Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, spokesman for the Thai Ministry of Defence, who responded to reports alleging that Mr Hun Sen had pressured Thailand to reopen the border by October 20.

He was quoted as saying it was unclear whether Mr Hun Sen’s remarks were intended to send any particular signal but reaffirmed that Thailand’s position remained unchanged, with no new measures to be taken beyond the four existing conditions.

In response, Mr Hun Sen’s spokesman, Chea Thyrith, dismissed the report as “slander,” referring to earlier statements by Cambodian leaders that Cambodia would never request Thailand to reopen the border.

He reiterated that Cambodia’s position remained firm and would not bow to pressure. “Even if Thailand keeps the border closed for 100 years, Cambodia will not perish,” he said.

Mr Thyrith condemned the Thai Defence Ministry spokesman for “slander and intent to mislead public opinion both within Thailand and internationally.”

“Samdech Techo’s stance, and Cambodia’s stance, has not changed,” he added.

Mr Hun Sen said in a statement on his official Facebook page last month that Cambodia will not request Thailand to reopen the border, which has been unilaterally closed by the Thai military, stressing that Cambodia’s position will remain unchanged regardless of how long the closure lasts.

“Since the Thai military unilaterally closed the border, Cambodia has never requested Thailand to reopen it,” Mr Hun Sen wrote at that time.

“We simply informed the Thai side that since Thailand closed it, Thailand must reopen it without any negotiation with Cambodia. Once Thailand reopens its side, Cambodia will follow five hours later.”
