Regarding the Diplomatic Stance of the Royal Government of Cambodia in Resolving Border Issues with Thailand
March 31, 2026

Q1: Amidst Thailand’s continued aggression, what actions and measures has the Royal Government undertaken to protect national sovereignty and to peacefully resolve border issues with Thailand?
A: Cambodia has adopted a peaceful, rule-based approach to resolving border issues with Thailand. The Royal Government has been actively pursuing diplomatic efforts as a peaceful, non-violent means of resolution, utilizing the JBC mechanism in accordance with conventions, treaties, and international law, while respecting the spirit of the GBC Joint Statement of 27 December 2025. In recent times, Cambodia has lodged a series of protests against various violations. Relevant ministries and institutions have also issued numerous press releases, protest letters, statements as well as clarifications, and have organized press conference to provide daily updates to the public. At the same time, relevant ministries and institutions have frequently led diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and observers to inspect the actual situation along the border. These efforts demonstrate that the Royal Government has taken concrete, active, and highly responsible actions to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Through these actions, the international community has become increasingly aware of Cambodia’s victimhood at the hands of Thai aggression and has come to understand Cambodia’s rightful struggle to defend its territory through peaceful means.

Q2: Why does the Royal Government prioritize diplomatic and legal mechanisms over the use of force in resolving border issues with Thailand?
A: True strength lies in permanent solutions, not temporary skirmishes. Samdech Prime Minister Hun Manet clearly understands that while the brave and heroic armed forces are ready to defend the Motherland, “bloodshed is not a solution.” By utilizing the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) mechanism, both countries can achieve a genuine, internationally recognized resolution that can build lasting peace along the border, unlike armed conflict that brings hardship to border communities and causes economic instability. This is precisely why the Royal Government and the leadership of Cambodia place the highest priority on peaceful resolution through diplomatic mechanisms and avoid the use of armed force.
