Cambodia on Sunday reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability along its border with Thailand, as an ASEAN observation mission monitored the situation at the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province, which is partly illegally occupied by the Thai army since late December.

Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Defence, said the Kingdom’s Coordination Group (CLG) assisted the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in observing, verifying and reporting on the border situation at 9:33am on March 29.

The mission aimed to ensure respect for and implementation of measures outlined in the Joint Declaration following the ceasefire, she said.

The observation activity also marked a transition in ASEAN leadership, with Malaysia handing over its chairmanship role to the Philippines, which will continue to lead the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia.

Lt Gen Socheata said the Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence remain firmly committed to fully and faithfully implementing all relevant agreements reached between Cambodia and Thailand.

These include the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, and the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between the two countries signed on October 26, 2025.
“This commitment is made with the aim of ensuring rapid recovery and restoring normalcy, and long-lasting peace and stability,” she added.

The Thai military has encroached 420 metres into Cambodian territory at the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint following military aggression against Cambodia in December 2025.

After the ceasefire on December 27, Thai troops on December 28 installed drainage boxes and barbed wire more than 400 metres inside Cambodian territory from the mutually agreed border gate, according to Oddar Meanchey Deputy Provincial Governor Met Measpheakdey.
