European Union in Cambodia’s new scholarship initiative will provide up to 30 fully funded degrees for Cambodian students to pursue higher education in water-related fields at universities across Europe, the organisation said yesterday.

Launched under the European Global Gateway Scholarship on Water Professions, the programme will support Cambodians seeking bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate in disciplines linked to water management, engineering, sustainability and related sectors.

The application deadline is May 15, 2026.

According to an EU statement, the scholarship will cover tuition fees, health insurance, living stipends and other benefits, offering recipients comprehensive financial support throughout their studies. The initiative is designed not only to expand educational opportunities but also to strengthen Cambodia’s human resources in a sector considered critical to national development.

The initiative highlights Team Europe’s long-standing engagement in Cambodia’s water sector, including its involvement in the Bakheng Water Treatment Plants, which now supply clean drinking water to nearly half of Phnom Penh’s population. By investing in higher education, the EU aims to complement infrastructure projects with expertise, ensuring that Cambodia can sustain and expand its water services to meet growing demand.

The scholarships are expected to help form a new generation of Europe-qualified Cambodian professionals who will return with international experience. These graduates could contribute to European financing institutions and private companies operating in the Kingdom, as well as to Cambodian government agencies, universities, training institutions and local water authorities.

Applicants must be Cambodian citizens under 25 years for bachelor’s, below 30 for master’s and under 40 for doctorate programmes at the time of application. Candidates must hold the appropriate academic qualifications for their chosen level of study and be proficient in English or the language required by the host institution, typically through internationally recognised tests such as IELTS or TOEFL.

A key requirement is proof of admission, pre-admission or a conditional offer from a university in an eligible EU member state in a programme related to water professions. Applicants must also demonstrate a strong commitment to return to Cambodia and contribute to the country’s water sector after completing their studies.
