Synopsis: Recently re-elected as CPV General Secretary at the party’s 14th National Congress, Lam’s trip reinforces longstanding Cambodia-Vietnam relations.
Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) General Secretary To Lam is scheduled to pay an official visit to Cambodia on Friday.
Lam was invited by King Norodom Sihamoni.
As part of the visit, Lam will co-preside over a high-level meeting between the CPV Central Committee’s Politburo and the Standing Board of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Central Committee at the invitation of CPP President Hun Sen, according to Vietnamese media outlets.
He was recently re-elected as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPV at the party’s 14th National Congress.
On the same day, he will also co-chair a separate meeting of the leaders of the ruling parties of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in Phnom Penh.
Vietnam and Cambodia officially established diplomatic relations on June 24, 1967, and their friendship has been continuously nurtured and strengthened since then.
Bilateral trade between the two countries rose 12% to $7.8 billion in 2025, with Cambodia exporting around $3 billion in goods to Vietnam.
Vietnam ranks among the top five countries with the largest direct investment in Cambodia, after China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan. The country currently has 229 valid investment projects in Cambodia, with total registered capital of about $2.94 billion.
Beyond trade and investment, Cambodia and Vietnam maintain close cooperation in defence and security, education, transport, culture, and telecommunications. The two countries also coordinate closely at international and regional forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN, and Mekong sub-regional cooperation mechanisms.
King Sihamoni made a two-day state visit to Vietnam in November 2024, meeting all Vietnamese leaders, including State President Luong Cuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who held separate meetings with the King.
During the visit, Vietnamese leaders praised Cambodia’s significant achievements in national development and expressed confidence that under the King’s reign and the leadership of the Senate, National Assembly, and government, the country would continue to advance toward peace, independence, democracy, and social progress. They reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong support for Cambodia’s vision for development in the new era.
