CHRC Urges UN Action Over Thai Military Threats and Forced Evictions of Cambodian Villagers
The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has renewed its urgent appeal to the United Nations, calling on the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing to intervene over continued threats and violations committed by Thai military forces along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
n a letter dated today addressed to Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, the CHRC reiterated its deep concern over “the actions of the Royal Thai Armed Forces that have encroached upon Cambodian territory, laid barbed-wire fences, blocked access to homes and farmland, and threatened the rights and safety of Cambodian civilians living along the border.”
The CHRC said credible reports indicated that Thai authorities intend to invoke martial law to forcibly remove Cambodian citizens from their homes and farmland, in violation of international law and human rights principles. It warned that such acts would cause severe social and humanitarian consequences for the affected communities.

“The Cambodian people who have already been forcibly displaced or are under threat of eviction are enduring immense suffering and hardship,” the committee stated. “Many families have lived on their land for generations, building not only homes but also communities, livelihoods, and cultural identities deeply rooted in those places.”
The letter expressed disappointment over the lack of response from the UN Special Rapporteur since the committee’s first appeal on 15 August, urging immediate action to prevent further rights violations.
“The CHRC expresses its deep disappointment that the Special Rapporteur has not yet responded to the urgent appeal, as this continued silence could risk undermining confidence in the United Nations human rights mechanisms and the effectiveness of its special procedures,” it said.
CHRC President Keo Remy reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to cooperate with UN human rights mechanisms and called for “prompt, unbiased, and effective intervention” to uphold the rights of Cambodian border communities.
