The government of Japan has announced an emergency grant of approximately $1.8 million to support humanitarian needs along the Cambodia–Thailand border, amid ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions between the two countries.

In an august 15 statement, Japanese ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi said Tokyo views “the cordial cooperative relations between Cambodia and Thailand as extremely important for the stability and development of the region”, and is committed to promoting the steady implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

The grant will be channelled through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Under the funding allocation, the IOM will receive $1 million to provide essential supplies, temporary shelters, and health and medical care.

UNICEF will be allocated $800,000 for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects, as well as child protection initiatives.

“Japan strongly hopes that peaceful livelihoods of citizens in both countries will be restored through the implementation of this humanitarian assistance,” Ueno explained, adding that Japan will “continue to cooperate toward easing of the tension between the two countries”.

The aid package comes as border communities continue to grapple with displacement and shortages of basic necessities.

Both implementing agencies are expected to begin operations immediately to address urgent needs.
