PM welcomes US reduction in tariffs on Cambodia, thanks President Trump for ceasefire efforts
Prime Minister Hun Manet has revealed that he asked US President Donald Trump to reduce tariffs on Cambodian goods, during a recent phone conversation with the US President.
The United States has decided to reduce tariffs on goods exported from Cambodia to the United States to 19% (from the initial rate of 49% and reduced to 36% in Phase 1).
This is good news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue developing the country.
On the morning of August 1, 2025, Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, made a post on his official social media with the following content:
“I would like to thank His Excellency President Donald Trump for his personal attention in initiating and promoting a ceasefire between the Cambodian and Thai armies and continuing to directly monitor the implementation of the ceasefire until there is permanent peace and normalization of relations between Cambodia and Thailand in the future. In addition, His Excellency the President has also provided understanding for Cambodia, providing opportunities to continue to strengthen economic development and trade relations between Cambodia and the United States.
During my phone conversation with His Excellency President Donald Trump on July 26 and 28, I emphasized the importance of peace and development in Cambodia, as Cambodia has just emerged from a chronic war.
On that occasion, I also requested His Excellency the President to provide understanding for easing the tax rate on goods imported from Cambodia to a low rate that will help Cambodia have the opportunity to continue developing the country and improving the living standards of the Cambodian people.
His Excellency Donald Trump has shown great interest in Cambodia’s bitter history, as well as his willingness to help the Cambodian people achieve peace and to help Cambodia continue to develop. Regarding my request regarding the tariff understanding, His Excellency the President told me on July 28 that he would consider it, and He told me that it would make Cambodia happy.
Today, His Excellency has decided to reduce the tariff rate on goods exported from Cambodia to the United States to 19%. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the tariff negotiation team with the United States, led by His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, and all those involved who have worked hard in negotiating the tariff with the United States, achieving excellent results so far.”
