Q1: What is Cambodia’s view on Thailand’s claim that Cambodia is using humanitarian issues as a political tool?
A: Cambodia has consistently affirmed that attention to the welfare and safety of affected civilians is a duty of the State, not a political maneuver. Cambodia considers that reporting on the humanitarian situation and seeking the attention of the international community is consistent with humanitarian principles and aims to ensure that victims receive appropriate protection and assistance. Such actions should not be interpreted as using humanitarian issues to pursue political gain. On the contrary, it is those who violate humanitarian principles who bear responsibility and must reconsider their approach to humanitarian concerns, as the world will not turn a blind eye to these issues.
Q2: Thailand has stated its readiness for negotiation and cooperation. What measures does Cambodia expect Thailand to implement?
A: Cambodia welcomes the affirmation of willingness to negotiate, but such willingness should be demonstrated through concrete actions, not merely through rhetoric. In this regard, Cambodia calls on the Thai side to cease actions that alter the situation along the border, resume the work of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) in good faith, and implement the agreements reached by both parties. Cambodia believes that only respect for agreements and international law can lead to lasting peace and confidence. Continued actions that violate the sovereignty of another country will not serve the peace, stability, and prosperity of the nation, its people, or the region as a whole.
