New Lao Ambassador to Cambodia Committed to Further Strengthening and Expanding Ties
On the afternoon of 11 May 2026, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, received a courtesy call from His Excellency Sonexay Vannaxay, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and his delegation at the Peace Palace.
During the meeting, the Lao Ambassador expressed his pride in being appointed by the Lao Government to serve in Cambodia. He praised and highly valued Cambodia’s socio-economic development across all sectors, including infrastructure, which serves as a catalyst for further economic growth. The Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the close cooperation between Laos and Cambodia and highlighted the importance of strengthening the “Comprehensive and Long-term Strategic Partnership” for the mutual benefit of both nations. On this occasion, His Excellency thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for the consistent support and assistance to Laos, particularly during Laos’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024 and the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ambassador was committed to further strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in all fields, as well as to promote the implementation of bilateral agreements for the mutual benefit of both peoples. He also informed Samdech Thipadei that in 2026, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, both sides have made preparations to celebrate the occasion in Phnom Penh and Vientiane.
In response, Samdech Thipadei extended his congratulations to His Excellency Sonexay Vannaxay on his appointment. Samdech Thipadei expressed confidence that the Ambassador would further contribute to strengthening and expanding the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, making them closer and deeper during his diplomatic tenure. Samdech Thipadei expressed satisfaction with the progress of bilateral relations and reaffirmed that Cambodia stands ready to continue strengthening and expanding cooperation with Laos in all sectors. He encouraged the Ambassador to work closely with relevant Cambodian ministries and institutions to enhance cooperation in key areas, including trade, the economy, transport infrastructure, agriculture, electrical energy, national defence, and security.
