Prime Minister Hun Manet has ordered a thorough investigation into a deadly hit-and-run accident in Battambang province that killed six people, including an unborn child, while seeking to reassure the public that justice will be served despite concerns over possible impunity.

The fatal crash occurred on March 27, 2026, in Moung Ruessei district, when a sports car driven at high speed reportedly struck a group of victims on a motorcycle before fleeing the scene, according to information shared by the Prime Minister on his official social media platform.

“I have seen many comments regarding this tragic traffic accident,” Manet said, noting widespread public concerns that the perpetrator might evade punishment due to alleged family connections to officials.

Expressing condolences to the victims’ families, the prime minister said he had instructed Minister of Justice Koeut Rith, along with National Police Chief Sar Thet, to conduct a “thorough investigation” to identify the driver responsible and ensure that the law is strictly enforced.

“The individual who drove the vehicle and caused the deaths of all six victims must be found and held accountable in accordance with the law, to provide justice to the victims,” he said.

Manet’s remarks come amid growing public scrutiny on social media, with some users raising raised concerns about unequal application of the law in cases involving “powerful figures” and their families.

The prime minister noted that legal accountability would be applied without exception, reiterating the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

At the same time, he called on citizens to exercise greater caution on the roads and strictly adhere to traffic regulations, particularly as Cambodia approaches the Khmer New Year holiday, a period typically marked by increased travel and a spike in road accidents.

He also reiterated warnings against drunk driving, stressing that those who violate traffic laws and endanger lives will face the “strictest legal consequences”.

Manet instructed sub-national authorities and relevant forces across the cities and provinces to intensify efforts in strengthening road safety measures during the upcoming holiday period, when many Cambodians travel to their hometowns or tourist destinations.

Traffic accidents remain a major public safety concern in Cambodia, especially during national holidays, often prompting renewed government calls for stricter enforcement and public awareness.
