– Q1: Recently, which areas did Cambodia lead the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organizations to visit?
– A: Cambodia led the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organizations accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Cambodia-Thailand border area at Thmor Da Commune, Veal Veng District, Pursat Province. Through this visit, the delegation witnessed firsthand the recent developments along the border caused by Thai forces and observed the situation of displaced Cambodian civilians currently living in makeshift shelter who have not yet been able to return to their homes, as their areas remain illegally occupied by Thai forces. Additionally, the inspection at the Thmor Da border crossing also revealed actions taken by Thai forces, including the installation of barbed wire and containers, which have blocked off National Road No. 55 and prevented civilians from accessing their homes and land.

– Q2: What benefits does Cambodia gain from guiding the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) on visits to the border areas?
– A: The visits of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to the border areas provide numerous benefits to Cambodia, both in the short and long term. This is a crucial means of enabling the international community to witness firsthand the actual situation along the border, minimizing misunderstandings caused by disinformation or false information, while increasing awareness of Cambodia’s genuine position.
Furthermore, the involvement of neutral parties, such as the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) and representatives of international organizations, also plays an important role in verifying and monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire and other related agreements to ensure effectiveness, helping to promote transparency, accountability, and mutual trust between the parties concerned—key elements for maintaining long-term stability. Moreover, such visits create pressure on the Thai side to respect its obligations and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions, as such actions are under the scrutiny of the international community. Therefore, as a nation, Thailand cannot allow its reputation to be tarnished in the eyes of the regional and international community. At the same time, this also strengthens ASEAN’s role in facilitating and ensuring regional peace by enhancing confidence in international mechanisms.
Finally, leading diplomatic corps and the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to visit the border areas not only serves to present the facts but also represents an effective diplomatic mechanism that helps strengthen Cambodia’s position on the international stage as a country that respects international law, peace, and is capable of defending both its sovereignty and national interests.
