AOT Team inspects Preah Vihear Temple during 6th mission of 2026

Today, January 13, the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) conducted an inspection tour of the situation in local villages in Sra-em commune, Choam Ksant district, Preah Vihear province. They also visited the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear Temple, which was damaged by Thai attacks during the recent fighting.
The mission marked the team’s sixth visit so far this year to locations damaged by Thai military strikes, following the ceasefire reached by both countries on December 27, according to the Ministry of National Defence.
Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata reiterated that Cambodia respects the ceasefire and joint statement on the peace agreement between the two neighbouring kingdoms, as well as all other relevant agreements, and is committed to their implementation.
“Cambodia always provides full support to the AOT. We support strengthening the role and mandate of the AOT to verify and ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, aiming to promote transparency, accountability and mutual trust,” she said.
She explained that the defence ministry has facilitated the work of the AOT as they observe, verify and report on the situation at numerous locations in Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Siem Reap provinces, all of which are home to civilian sites that suffered attacks by the Thai military.
“As a law-abiding and highly responsible state, Cambodia adheres to the peaceful resolution of conflicts in accordance with international law and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and the ASEAN Charter,” she said.
She added that Cambodia absolutely opposes the threat or use of force, and wishes to achieve a solution that is just, impartial and long-lasting, serving as a foundation for the people of both countries to coexist in peace, stability and development.
