Cambodia’s defence ministry to lead military attachés and diplomats on border inspection mission

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence will lead a delegation of foreign military attachés and diplomats based in Cambodia to inspect the real-time situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, following five days of military clashes between the two countries and the recent implementation of a ceasefire agreement brokered in Malaysia.

According to Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, who spoke during a press briefing in Phnom Penh on July 29, the inspection is aimed at presenting Cambodia’s firm commitment to honouring and upholding the ceasefire agreement reached with Thailand.

“The Ministry’s leadership will organise a field mission to the border tomorrow to observe the situation firsthand,” said the spokesperson. “This initiative has drawn strong interest from ASEAN military attachés and representatives of several major powers who have shown support for Cambodia’s clear and peaceful stance in managing the conflict.”

Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata reaffirmed that Cambodian armed forces remain fully supportive of the government’s policy to resolve border issues through peaceful means and in compliance with international law. “Cambodia seeks to transform all of its borders with the neighbouring countries into frontiers of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development,” she added.

Cambodia and Thailand agreed to a ceasefire effective from midnight, July 28, 2025, following a special meeting held in Malaysia, which was initiated by the United States and chaired by the Malaysian Prime Minister in his role as rotating ASEAN Chair, with China also participating in the discussions.
