Senate President Hun Sen on Friday paid his respects to the late mother of former opposition leader Kem Sokha, Sao Nget, following her death at the age of 101.

According to Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith, Mr Hun Sen visited the funeral after concluding an official mission to Cambodia’s northeastern provinces.

During the visit, Mr Hun Sen lit incense in tribute to Sao Nget before meeting with Sokha. The two exchanged greetings and inquired about each other’s well-being, the spokesman said.

Sao Nget died at around 11pm on Wednesday at Sokha’s residence in Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh, after suffering from illness, according to Sokha’s lawyer, Pheng Heng.

Her funeral is being held at Phnom Penh Thmey Borie ELITE PARK_2 in Krang Thnong commune, Sen Sok district.

According to the family, Sao Nget’s body will be taken for burial in Trapeang Trakiet village, Oudom Soriya commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province.

As part of traditional Buddhist funeral rites, Sokha is scheduled to undergo a temporary ordination as a monk at 5pm on Saturday in front of his mother’s funeral pyre to honour her and express gratitude for her lifelong care and sacrifice.
