King Norodom Sihamoni yesterday issued a royal message to mark the 27th National Mine Awareness Day, reinforcing Cambodia’s dedicated resolve to eliminate the scourge of landmines and support those affected by explosive remnants of war.

This year’s commemoration focused on the theme “Together for Displaced Persons and Safe Communities.” The King highlighted the importance of raising public awareness to prevent tragedies from unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the kingdom.

The monarch reflected on the heavy toll that decades of internal conflict have taken on the nation, noting that large areas of contaminated land continue to impede national development. These hidden dangers have resulted in tens of thousands of Cambodians dead, injured, or permanently disabled while damaging crucial infrastructure.

Recent military actions along the Thai border have led to more contamination of civilian areas by bombs and shells. This situation has increased the government’s responsibility to conduct urgent clearance operations to protect its citizens.

The King praised the government’s progress in destroying stockpiled mines and expanding nationwide demining efforts with the aid of international partners. He expressed deep appreciation for the mine action centres and authorities whose work allows farmers to return to their land with dignity.

Concluding his address, the monarch appealed to “friendly governments” and charitable organisations to continue their support for Cambodia’s clearance and victim assistance programmes as the nation pursues its goal of becoming mine-free. AKP
