Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to return to their respective military headquarters to await further negotiations after a bilateral border committee meeting ended without reaching common ground, according to a statement from Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence.

“A meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC), involving Cambodia’s Military Region 4 and Thailand’s Army Area 2, was held at the Choam–Sa Ngam International Point of Entry in Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province, at 11.50am this morning,” explained ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata on February 2.

The talks were monitored by the ASEAN Observer Teams (AOT) of both countries.

“Despite discussions, neither side was able to reach a consensus during the session. As a result, they agreed to withdraw to their respective headquarters to continue exchanging documents and negotiations with the aim of reaching an agreement at a later stage,” said Socheata.

According to the ministry, a formal signing ceremony and a full meeting of the Regional Border Committee will only be organised once both parties reach a mutual understanding.

The special RBC meeting was convened in line with the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC), held on December 27, 2025.

During that meeting, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement agreed outcomes, reduce tensions along the border and pursue practical cooperation to promote peace and stability.

The ministry stated that both sides continue to emphasise dialogue and confidence-building measures, with the goal of restoring normalcy along the border as soon as possible.
