Herd of wild elephants attempts ‘to break through border barrier’

Reports from Battambang province say that a herd of wild elephants attempted to break through the shut off Cambodian-Thai border into Cambodia yesterday.

According to Mr. Mei Nan, Chief of the Area 400 Police Station in Samlot District, Battambang Province, at 12:20 a.m. on January 3, 2026, at the checkpoint at the high point along the Cambodia-Thailand border, Area 400 Gate, an unknown number of wild elephants entered and broke through the Thai border fence and barbed wire in an attempt to cross into Cambodian territory.

In this incident, both sides were shocked by the sounds of screaming and the sound of breaking the iron fence, which led to the conclusion that the wild elephants might want to cross into Cambodian territory, which is why they broke the Thai fence.

Immediately, the elephants were chased back into Thai territory by the regular forces of both sides, before they could cross into Cambodia.
